We have been working with the City and the County regarding the Darden Towe Tennis Courts rehab. This Capital Improvement Project has been funded and is in the planning/design phase with a current schedule for substantial completion by the second quarter of 2016. While it was originally thought that the design had been vetted and approved, this is not the case because the tennis community did not feel they had been given a proper chance to participate in the process. As a result, the project has undergone considerable scrutiny by the tennis community over the last few weeks. Albemarle County planning engineers have drafted 3 options currently, all of which include pickleball courts as part of the rehabilitation project. Some members of the tennis community have expressed the opinion that tennis and pickleball cannot cohabitate in the same facility, a complaint that has been generated many times over the years and across the country as communities go through the process of establishing pickleball facilities. Ultimately, in most cases the end result is that tennis and pickleball can and do cohabitate quite nicely.
The City and County are committed to finding a way to address the needs of both the tennis and pickleball groups. The Central Virginia Pickleball Club is continuing to work with the City and the County on the rehabilitation project and to represent the interests of the pickleball community. This project, and the process of working with all of the parties involved to a successful and positive conclusion is a prime example of why we needed a Club and how, working together as a cohesive group, we can have a voice and be heard. There is power in numbers. To that end, we would like to invite you to sign a petition, which is really a show of support to the City and County for the addition of pickleball courts to the Darden Towe tennis courts rehabilitation project.
