Frequently Asked Questions - Darden Towe

Picture
Why is this project costing so much more than last time?

This project is a total renovation of all of the courts, including fixing/patching of cracks, repaving and painting, as well as the addition of 4 foot fencing between all of the courts and a six foot fence separating the front courts from the back courts.  The design allows for gates to be installed in the court areas for access. There will be 4 exterior doors to the complex. This design is the standard for a pickleball complex and is expected to last 10 years or longer.  (See photo above.)

Why isn’t the County/City paying for any of this?

It’s been many years since any new courts have been built in Albemarle County—and here’s why: the Parks & Recreation budget makes up just 1% of the entire county budget. That leaves very little room for recreational capital projects. The few dollars that are available right now are going toward infrastructure work—like roads and parking—at the new Biscuit Run Park.
This means projects like ours need to rely on community support to become a reality. Just look at what the Charlottesville Area Mountain Bike Club did—they wanted a bike course at Biscuit Run, but there were no county funds available. So they took matters into their own hands and raised $86,000 in just six weeks!
Across the country, local communities are stepping up to fund the recreational spaces they want—and need. With your help, we can do the same here.

Will there be room for seating within the fenced areas?

There will be room for some seating – we anticipate having a bench located within each court area. If fundraising does not allow immediate inclusion of benches, people can bring chairs for seating.

Will there be a paddle rack system and where will it be located?

That is a good question. We will have to ponder how a paddle rack system would work with the fenced layout of the courts. Hopefully with 12 courts available, this will not be an immediate need.

My employer would like to be a major sponsor - how can they get involved?

That's awesome! Larger donations are being accepted through the Albemarle County Parks Foundation.  Or email:  [email protected] for additional information.  Information regarding corporate donor levels and benefits can be found here.

I would prefer to write a check.  Is there a mailing address I can use?

Absolutely!  Mail all checks to our treasurer:
